Start a Business
Here are the basics that apply to almost all new business start-ups:
Determining your business structure is generally one of the first courses of action when starting a new business. Information on various legal structures is available through the Oklahoma Business Start-up Guide.
REGISTER A BUSINESS NAME
Secure your business name by filing with the Secretary of State’s office.
EMPLOYER TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS
Determine if you need a Federal Identification Number (referred to as FEIN or EIN). For more information, click here. Apply for a Federal Identification Number from the IRS at www.irs.gov or call 800-829-4933.
BUSINESS LICENSES AND PERMITS
Register your business with the appropriate state agencies. Not every business requires a license or permit in Oklahoma, and not every business needs to register. For assistance determining which applications, permits, licenses, or registrations are required, use the Oklahoma Department of Commerce’s Business Registration & Licensing System. To determine if you are required to obtain a permit or license from the City of Norman, please click here.
For information direct from the primary agencies of registration you may also want to visit:
- The Secretary of State – includes checking name availability and reserving your trade name
- The Oklahoma Tax Commission – Check out their online Oklahoma Business Registration System.
- Oklahoma Employment Security Commission – new businesses with employees must establish an account for state unemployment taxes
